The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) is the oldest, most prestigious specialty board in the field of orthodontics. The ABO’s purpose is to maintain and elevate the professional standards of the orthodontic practice, help familiarize the public with the importance of orthodontics and how to access quality treatment, and to protect the general public from the dangers of irresponsible, unqualified practitioners.
In keeping with its overall mission, the Board upholds four main objectives:
A board-certified orthodontist, also known as a Diplomat of the ABO, has passed a voluntary examination by his or her peers that certifies him or her as a reputable, distinguished practitioner of orthodontics.
Board certification signifies a level of excellence in professional competency, as well as demonstrating a continued pursuit of excellence in orthodontics. ABO certification is a prestigious award that demonstrates an orthodontist’s skill in the complex tools and techniques of orthodontics.
We’re proud to say that our very own orthodontist, Dr. Christian Hoybjerg, is ABO certified! Dr. Hoybjerg had to pass a rigorous set of written and clinical examination, along with a comprehensive review of his credentials and experience.
The process takes anywhere from 5 to 10 years, and Dr. Hoybjerg has to get recertified every 10 years to maintain this status. He worked hard to achieve certification, and we couldn’t be more proud of him!
