Early Orthodontic Treatment for Children
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist as early as age 7. By this time, your child’s first adult molars have erupted, creating the back bite, which Dr. Hoybjerg will evaluate to determine whether your child will need orthodontic treatment.
Early treatment, also known as Phase-One treatment, typically begins around age 8 or 9 and helps prevent more serious problems later in life. The goal of early treatment is to correct jaw growth and bite issues. Early treatment also helps make room for permanent teeth to come in properly, lessening the chance of issues in the future.
Does my Child Need Braces?
Dr. Hoybjerg does create beautiful smiles, but orthodontic treatment does much more than improve the look of your teeth; it improves your health. Bad bites affect how you chew, smile, clean your teeth and more, so if you notice your child is experiencing any of the issues below, schedule an appointment with our office today.
- Teeth that don't come together in a normal manner or even at all
- Difficulty chewing and/or biting
- Your child continues sucking their thumb after age five
- Early or late loss of baby teeth - tooth loss should start around age 5
- Protruding teeth
- Shifting of the jaw when your child opens or closes their mouth
- Speech impediments
- Crowded front teeth around age seven or eight
- Mouth breathing
Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment
Orthodontic problems can be caused by a wide array of problems. Injury, thumb sucking habits, and natural tooth and jaw formation are just a few.
Most children have all of their permanent teeth by age 13. The jaw is typically fully formed by age 16 for girls, and 18 for boys. Receiving early orthodontic treatment as a child can help prevent the need for orthodontics as an adult, lessening the chance of extraction or surgery in the future. Orthodontic procedures for adults often take more time and can involve major surgery. If your child is between the ages of 7 and 8 and shows signs of needing orthodontic care please contact our practice and schedule an appointment. Our team will examine your child’s oral health and discuss the best steps to take toward caring for your child's smile.
