Will Dental Insurance Cover Braces for Children?

April 5th, 2017

Not all dental insurance plans will cover braces for your child. While there are certainly some plans that will cover braces, it’s important to check with your insurance provider because it will depend entirely upon your insurance plan. Even in the instances where braces are covered, the policies can vary – some may only cover braces in the cases where it’s considered “medically necessary” and not when it’s just a cosmetic treatment. We understand that this process of determining whether your dental insurance will cover braces for children can be tricky and complicated, which is why as your trusted orthodontist, we at Hoybjerg Family Orthodontics will be more than happy to help you in any way that we can.

Will My Dental Insurance Cover Orthodontic Care?

While insurance plans and coverage will vary depending on the provider, we’d like to give you some general information on having braces covered by insurance.

  • The first thing you need to do is talk to your insurance provider about not just if your dental insurance covers orthodontic care, but if your medical insurance includes dental coverage. Most medical insurance plans don’t include dental coverage and it’s typically something that you need to buy separately. If you have children under 18 though, companies are required to give you an option to purchase dental insurance.
  • Dental insurance will rarely ever cover braces for the reason of cosmetic issues. Unfortunately, sometimes the line can get blurry as to what is considered a cosmetic issue or not. If your child has trouble chewing or has a clear medical need for braces, then it’s likely that the orthodontic treatment will be covered by your insurance company.
  • All dental plans will have a yearly cap on how much they’ll pay for your services. The act of getting braces may exceed this yearly cap all on its own.
  • If your dental insurance accepts braces for children, then there may be a waiting period. There are some procedures that have waiting periods under dental insurance so it’s important to check which ones they are beforehand.

Embrace Your Oral Hygiene

February 6th, 2017

The team at Hoybjerg Family Orthodontics is so proud to help our patients achieve a healthy smile that they are proud to show off. Orthodontic treatment is a half of the “healthy smile” equation, and we sure hope you are very familiar with the other half: oral hygiene. This is why we are inviting everyone to embrace your oral hygiene!

On top of it, when you have braces, you now have some extra equipment that also needs to be cleaned multiple times a day.

Oral Hygiene and Braces

While you have braces, oral hygiene is important for all the same reasons it was before treatment and then some:

  • Unhealthy oral hygiene habits can lead to a delay in getting your braces off. When you neglect your teeth and gums you become more susceptible to swollen gums, cavities, and time in the dental chair. When you delay adjustments and steps within your treatment plan to handle dental treatment, getting your braces off can take longer.

  • Poor oral hygiene can leave your smile looking spotty. If you aren’t properly caring for your teeth while you have braces, plaque and bacteria will gather, stains can form, and when you get your braces off the discoloration and decalcification will be noticeable.

  • Food and plaque have so many hiding places now. Food has always taken up residence in between the teeth, around the gumline, and anywhere it can find shelter. Now that you have braces, there are many more options for food and plaque to hang out, whether it’s in around a bracket or under a wire.

A Healthy Smile Both Inside and Out

At Hoybjerg Family Orthodontics we help patients achieve their healthiest smiles possible. Dr. Hoybjerg and his team will make sure you know how to properly care for your teeth and braces, but you can always contact us if you have questions. Bring an Emergency Kit with You

You should always have an orthodontic kit with you just in case you run into any problems with your braces. An efficient emergency kit should include orthodontic wax, nail clippers, tweezers, a pencil with an eraser, and our phone number just in case you need help. While a few of those are obvious in their usage, others may cause curiosity as to why they’d be included in an orthodontic kit. Which leads us to our next tip…

Take Advantage of Unassuming Items

This is where some of the seemingly odd items in the emergency kit come into play. In instances where the wire is protruding and seems to be poking or irritating you, you can actually use the eraser end of a pencil to push it back into a more favorable position. If the wire is still bothersome, you can use a pair of disinfected nail clippers to cut off the offending part of the wire. If a bracket comes loose from your tooth or a small elastic ligature comes loose from your braces, you can use a pair of disinfected tweezers to remove the problematic parts.

Reach an Orthodontist in Case of a True Emergency

If you happen to experience a true emergency where you don’t think you’ll be able to wait until you get back home, we recommend contacting the local dental society for an orthodontist they can refer you to. Alternatively, you can search the internet for an orthodontist nearby you. Most orthodontists have an emergency contact number to reach them at and they’ll be able to help an out-of-town patient with a problem that needs immediate attention.
