Emergency Braces Care Over the Holidays

December 12th, 2016

At Hoybjerg Family Orthodontics, we strive to be your premier choice when you’re looking for an orthodontist in or around Sacramento, Placerville, Roseville, Modesto, and El Dorado Hills, CA. We pride ourselves on our commitment to patient care, including our emergency care that we provide. However, we realize that the holidays are coming up soon, which means traveling away from home for many families and individuals. In the case of an orthodontic emergency, we don’t want you to feel panicked, so we’ve provided you with a few tips that may help out in case you run into orthodontic trouble over the holidays.

Bring an Emergency Kit with You

You should always have an orthodontic kit with you just in case you run into any problems with your braces. An efficient emergency kit should include orthodontic wax, nail clippers, tweezers, a pencil with an eraser, and our phone number just in case you need help. While a few of those are obvious in their usage, others may cause curiosity as to why they’d be included in an orthodontic kit. Which leads us to our next tip…

Take Advantage of Unassuming Items

This is where some of the seemingly odd items in the emergency kit come into play. In instances where the wire is protruding and seems to be poking or irritating you, you can actually use the eraser end of a pencil to push it back into a more favorable position. If the wire is still bothersome, you can use a pair of disinfected nail clippers to cut off the offending part of the wire. If a bracket comes loose from your tooth or a small elastic ligature comes loose from your braces, you can use a pair of disinfected tweezers to remove the problematic parts.

Reach an Orthodontist in Case of a True Emergency

If you happen to experience a true emergency where you don’t think you’ll be able to wait until you get back home, we recommend contacting the local dental society for an orthodontist they can refer you to. Alternatively, you can search the internet for an orthodontist nearby you. Most orthodontists have an emergency contact number to reach them at and they’ll be able to help an out-of-town patient with a problem that needs immediate attention.

Finding an Orthodontist in Roseville

September 16th, 2016

It can seem like a daunting task to find an orthodontist as there are many practices in Roseville to choose from. If you are looking for a local orthodontist because you’ve recently gotten a new job or have moved to the area for another reason, here are some tips for finding the right orthodontist for you and your family.

Fountain in Roseville

Start Online

A good starting point for finding an orthodontist in Roseville is to conduct a search online. Just enter a relevant search phrase like “orthodontics Roseville CA” or “Roseville orthodontists” to see a listing of local orthodontic practices. Then read through the websites to find orthodontists which meet your requirements according to things like office locations, types of braces used, which insurance plans are accepted, treatment cost, etc.

Read Reviews From Patients

While you’re searching online, take a look at sites like Yelp and Google that offer reviews of local orthodontic offices which have been written by actual patients. This is a great way to gain some valuable insight into the various orthodontic practices. Getting a feel for other people's’ experiences is a great way to help you create a short list of orthodontists for you to choose from.

Decide What You Value Most in an Orthodontist

Now that you have a short list of local orthodontic practices to choose from, take the time to determine just what you consider to be a great orthodontist. Maybe finding an affordable care is very important to you or an orthodontist that has an office near your home or work. When you find an office that “ticks all the boxes”, you should give that practice a call to set up an appointment time.

The Dangers of DIY Braces

July 12th, 2016

At Hoybjerg Family Orthodontics, we believe everyone deserves a beautiful, healthy smile, and we're always happy to see patients excited and motivated to achieve their own. But while eagerness to achieve a new smile is always welcome, there's a new trend that's seriously worrying to us: do-it-yourself, or DIY, braces.

Man Missing Tooth

Do-It-Yourself Disaster

DIY braces generally take the form of using rubber bands, string, or other non-orthodontic appliances to attempt to move teeth. Often, people will try to tie a string or rubber band around two teeth to pull them together or put a makeshift "spacer" in between teeth to attempt to spread them out. It may seem harmless, but this attempt at moving teeth can cause serious problems with your bite and smile.

Orthodontics is an incredibly complicated field, and the tools and techniques that we use at our office are specially designed and precisely calibrated to apply a gentle, constant force on the teeth. This is the only way to safely and reliably realign teeth. Attempting to move teeth using crude instruments like rubber bands or strings not only won't work, but can actually dislodge the connections between the tooth and the supporting tissues underneath. This can lead to severe damage to the tooth, gums, and bones around it, usually causing the tooth to fall out and sometimes leaving permanent damage. While enthusiasm is a great thing, if you know anyone trying to make "DIY braces" for themselves, tell them to stop immediately. If they don't, they may be causing serious damage to their smile - damage that may never go away.

If you're gearing up for the big day, it's safe to assume that your smile is something you're thinking about. After all, your smile is the most important accessory you'll be wearing on your wedding day.

If your smile is not as perfect as you'd like it to be, now is a great time to think about improving it with Invisalign. This modern, discreet and convenient orthodontic treatment option can straighten your teeth to give you the perfect smile for every special moment on your big day.

smiling brideOn average, brides give themselves between 12 and 15 months to plan their weddings to ensure they don't miss a single detail. Considering that Invisalign treatment takes an average of 13 months to complete now is the perfect time to see an orthodontist so your smile so is picture-perfect on the big day!

Invisalign is a fast and easy way to improve your smile. It consists of a sequence of clear, removable aligners you wear over your teeth to gradually move your teeth into their ideal positions. Since you can take the aligners out, you simply remove them when eating, brushing or flossing. This means there are no food restrictions to deal with during tastings for the reception!

When you're wearing Invisalign, you can smile big for the camera during those times your friends and family are snapping photos at your bridal shower or engagement party. In fact, the clear aligners are so discreet, many people won't even notice you're wearing them!

When you've finished your orthodontic treatment and the big day finally arrives, you will look amazing in all of those wedding day selfies and professional photos of you and your husband walking down the aisle, exchanging your vows, cutting the cake and taking those late-night spins on the dance floor. During all this attention, your straight and beautiful smile will be center-stage and you'll know it looks nothing short of amazing!
