Retainer Instructions

retainer instructions

  • Always wear your retainer until the doctor gives you instructions to remove it.
  • Take your retainer out while eating and store it safely in its case!  The most common place for retainers to be lost is in school lunchrooms and restaurants.
  • Clean the retainer completely every day with a toothbrush and toothpaste.  Use warm water rather than hot water.  This regular cleaning will remove plaque and odors.  There are orthodontic appliance cleaners that can be used, but they should not replace brushing.
  • If your retainer is not in your mouth, it should DEFINITELY be in its case.  Pets seem to love chewing on retainers!
  • At first, it may be difficult to speak.  If you will practice speaking or singing, you should adjust to the retainer more quickly.
  • Be aware that retainers are definitely breakable.  If yours gets lost or damaged, contact us right away.
  • Do not attempt to adjust your own retainer.  Call us with any questions.
  • Makes sure to bring your retainer along to all of your appointments.
  • While retainers are expensive, they will last for years if they are properly cared for.
  • Definitely remove your retainer if you go swimming.
  • Make sure to keep your container out of hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, washing machines, and napkins.
