Emergency Braces Care Over the Holidays

Emergency Braces Care Over the Holidays

At Hoybjerg Family Orthodontics, we strive to be your premier choice when you’re looking for an orthodontist in or around Sacramento, Placerville, Roseville, Modesto, and El Dorado Hills, CA. We pride ourselves on our commitment to patient care, including our emergency care that we provide. However, we realize that the holidays are coming up soon, which means traveling away from home for many families and individuals. In the case of an orthodontic emergency, we don’t want you to feel panicked, so we’ve provided you with a few tips that may help out in case you run into orthodontic trouble over the holidays.

Bring an Emergency Kit with You

You should always have an orthodontic kit with you just in case you run into any problems with your braces. An efficient emergency kit should include orthodontic wax, nail clippers, tweezers, a pencil with an eraser, and our phone number just in case you need help. While a few of those are obvious in their usage, others may cause curiosity as to why they’d be included in an orthodontic kit. Which leads us to our next tip…

Take Advantage of Unassuming Items

This is where some of the seemingly odd items in the emergency kit come into play. In instances where the wire is protruding and seems to be poking or irritating you, you can actually use the eraser end of a pencil to push it back into a more favorable position. If the wire is still bothersome, you can use a pair of disinfected nail clippers to cut off the offending part of the wire. If a bracket comes loose from your tooth or a small elastic ligature comes loose from your braces, you can use a pair of disinfected tweezers to remove the problematic parts.

Reach an Orthodontist in Case of a True Emergency

If you happen to experience a true emergency where you don’t think you’ll be able to wait until you get back home, we recommend contacting the local dental society for an orthodontist they can refer you to. Alternatively, you can search the internet for an orthodontist nearby you. Most orthodontists have an emergency contact number to reach them at and they’ll be able to help an out-of-town patient with a problem that needs immediate attention.
