The Importance of Oral Hygiene

The Importance of Oral Hygiene

The team at Hoybjerg Family Orthodontics is so proud to help our patients achieve a healthy smile that they are proud to show off. Orthodontic treatment is a half of the “healthy smile” equation, and we sure hope you are very familiar with the other half: oral hygiene. This is why we are inviting everyone to embrace your oral hygiene!
So while braces can align your teeth, and even after treatment make it easier to clean your teeth, I think we all know they won’t actually clean your teeth and gums for you. On top of it, when you have braces, you now have some extra equipment that also needs to be cleaned multiple times a day.

Oral Hygiene and Braces

While you have braces, oral hygiene is important for all the same reasons it was before treatment and then some:

  • Unhealthy oral hygiene habits can lead to a delay in getting your braces off. When you neglect your teeth and gums you become more susceptible to swollen gums, cavities, and time in the dental chair. When you delay adjustments and steps within your treatment plan to handle dental treatment, getting your braces off can take longer.
  • Poor oral hygiene can leave your smile looking spotty. If you aren’t properly caring for your teeth while you have braces, plaque and bacteria will gather, stains can form, and when you get your braces off the discoloration and decalcification will be noticeable.
  • Food and plaque have so many hiding places now. Food has always taken up residence in between the teeth, around the gumline, and anywhere it can find shelter. Now that you have braces, there are many more options for food and plaque to hang out, whether it’s in around a bracket or under a wire.
