Not all dental insurance plans will cover braces for your child. While there are certainly some plans that will cover braces, it’s important to check with your insurance provider because it will depend entirely upon your insurance plan. Even in the instances where braces are covered, the policies can vary – some may only cover braces in the cases where it’s considered “medically necessary” and not when it’s just a cosmetic treatment. Will My Dental Insurance Cover Orthodontic Care?

While insurance plans and coverage will vary depending on the provider, we’d like to give you some general information on having braces covered by insurance.

• The first thing you need to do is talk to your insurance provider about not just if your dental insurance covers orthodontic care, but if your medical insurance includes dental coverage. Most medical insurance plans don’t include dental coverage and it’s typically something that you need to buy separately. If you have children under 18 though, companies are required to give you an option to purchase dental insurance.
• Dental insurance will rarely ever cover braces for the reason of cosmetic issues. Unfortunately, sometimes the line can get blurry as to what is considered a cosmetic issue or not. If your child has trouble chewing or has a clear medical need for braces, then it’s likely that the orthodontic treatment will be covered by your insurance company.
• All dental plans will have a yearly cap on how much they’ll pay for your services. The act of getting braces may exceed this yearly cap all on its own.
• If your dental insurance accepts braces for children, then there may be a waiting period. There are some procedures that have waiting periods under dental insurance so it’s important to check which ones they are beforehand.
